Narrative Theory

What is narrative ?
  • Story
  • Plot
  • Narrative is the way the story is organised

Elements of narrative:

  • Time
  • Closure
  • Enigma (Problems created)

Classical Hollywood Narrative:

  • Linear
  • Few, if any, sub plots
  • Tendency towards closure

Theories of narrative

  1. Todorov
  • Equilibrium (happy start)
  • Disruption (Enigma - problem; who/what/why?)
  • Resolution (End of film; closure - problems and questions are sloved)
  • New equilibrium (Happy ending)

2. Propp

  • Analysed folk stories
  • 8 key character roles :
  • THE HERO (protagonist)
  • THE VILLAIN (antagonist)
  • THE DONOR (provider; gives magic item to hero)
  • THE HELPER (side kick; helps the hero)
  • THE FATHER (gives advice)
  • THE DISPATCHER (sends hero on mission)
  • THE PRINCESS
  • THE FALSE HERO (villan; we think is hero but is villan)

Levi Strauss & Binary Oppositions

  • Levi Strauss argued that a structure of narratives was a dependence on a binary oppositions.
  • A conflict between two qualities of terms.
  • The binary oppositions can form the basis of narratives eg: YOUNG -- OLD , MALE -- FELMALE.
  • Eg. Gender; narratives can be organised through binary oppositions of gender stereotypes

Gender Stereotypes : MASCULINE

  • professional
  • strong
  • rational
  • competitive
  • independant
  • aggressive
  • rithless
  • ambitions

Gender Stereotypes : FEMININE

  • domesticated weak
  • emotional
  • co-operative
  • communal
  • passive
  • sensitive
  • supportive

Eg. The Western

  • Homesteaders - Narrative Americans
  • Christian - Pagan
  • Domestic - Savage
  • Weak - Strong
  • Feminie - Masculine
  • Garden - Wilderness
  • Inside society - Outside society

Analysis of finished video

ANALYSIS OF FINISHED VIDEO

We wanted to communicate to the audience through our music video. We wanted to show teenagers out having fun. Because they were teenagers, so they were young we wanted to portray them as glamerous. We were inspired by other artists such as the Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud and The Saturdays to make the teenagers in our video look glamerous and "celebrity-like."

SHOT LIST
For the first part of the song "I'm the ringleader" this scene had all four of the girls, at London. We used a mid-shot for this scene. We wanted to use a mid-shot so everyone was shown in the shot and we could see all four of the girls in the opening scene.

For the first verse we had two of the girls singing, and also the four girls dancing. For this we used a long shot and a mid shot. This was to show the four girls looking glamerous and so we could see all four girls in the shot.

We filmed the chorus at the Grafitti park and edited this with different effects on it. The bridge was also filmed here and we used a high angle shot for this to show the girls from slightly above. We added effects here because we wanted to make this part of the video look glamerous and colourful.

The second verse was filmed on the climbing frame in the graffiti park and it was a shot of Alma and Ashleigh. We used an extreme close up here as we just wanted the two girls to be seen in the shot.

The chorus then came again and this was all four of the girls dancing. We wanted all of the girls to be seen in this shot so we could see them all dancing therefore we chose to use a long shot. This looked colourful as we had the colours from the graffiti in the background and then we had the four girls dressed in different coloured clothes as well.

For the third verse we had Alma by herself and the Jazuzzi scene. When Alma was sanding and doing her little dance routine we used a low angle shot so the camera was looking up at Alma, this made the shot look like all at the attention was on her and this was the effect we wanted to give so this worked well.

The chorus was then played another twice more and for this we had shots from London, the four girls walkin and we also filmed at Madamme Tussads. We used tracking shots, long shots, close ups, reverse shots and the aim of this was to show the four girls out having fun and looking glamerous and I think we achieved this.

PERFORMERS

Originally our performers were going to consist of Karishma, Alma, Arianne and Pui-San. However after a few times of filming Pui-San left the group and we had to find someone else to take her place. Ashleigh stepped in and we had to start our filming again with our new group member. Our perfomers were made up of Karishma, Alma, Ashleigh and Arianne.

LOCATIONS

The locations we filmed for our music video included:
Madamme Tussads
London
Graffiti park
Jacuzzi

COSTUMES

For the parts filmed at the graffiti park the four girls were wearing tracksuits. They had two different tracksuits and were filmed wearinf wach of them. This was to make the scene look colourful and eye-catching. When filming in London and Madamme Tussads the girls were more dressed up to show them on a night out having fun and looking glamerous. For these outfits we were inspired by other artists such as The Saturdays, The Pussycat Dolls and Girls Aloud. And the scene shot in the Jacuzzi the girls of course had to wear bikini's.

PROPS

The props will used included:

  • handbags
  • Alma's ring
  • Climbing frame
  • Benches

  • Water fountain

ORGANISATION OF OUR GROUP

  • 1st Verse - Karishma and Arianne
  • 2nd Verse - Alma and Ashleigh

  • 3rd Verse - Alma and Karishma

  • Chorus - Alma, Karishma, Arianne and Ashleigh

THE ORDER OF OUR FILMING

First of all we fimed all of the choruses at the grafitti park, so they were all out the way. Then the jacuzzi scene was filmed followed by Madamme Tussads and London. We then edited them and put them all in the order we wanted them and cut out any unwanted footage that was not needed for our music video. We then had to film the graffiti scene again as Pui-San left, and edit this and fit it in our music video in the correct order.

FILM LANGUAGE - CAMERA WORK

Jacuzzi - high angle looking down. Looks glamerous becasue of the coloured lights shinning upwards onto the girls.

Graffiti park and dance scene - looked fun because it was colourful, was "enjoyable" to look at, as it was eye catching.

Fountain - lights from the background were shinning onto the girls this made them look independant as they each had their own style to independantly blow kisses to the camera.

LIGHTING

Graffiti - was filmed while it was sunny so the sun was shinning made it look more colourful which made the scene enjoyable and eye catching.

Jacuzzi - the coloured lights were shinning onto Karishma and Alma in the jacuzzi the colours were rainbow colours and this scene look glamerous.

Madamme Tussauds - we had the camera lights flashing; like pictures were being taken of the people in our video. This made them look "celebrity-like" and this idea was inspired by other girl groups that are glamerous.

COLOUR

We used alot of different colour in our music video. We wanted as much colour as possible to make our vido look glamerous and bright so it was fun and enjoyable to watch. When filming for the jacuzzi there were colourful lights around the edge that reflected on Alma and Karishma, it was dark with the lighting which set the atmosphere. We also had the four girls wearing colourful clothes throughout our music video, and when we filmed at the grafetti park the background was all bright and colourful which was good because our music video was bright throughout.

EDITING

When editing our music video we used jump cuts to cut from one location to the next, to show a transformation in locations. We also used effects when editing, however because it was a fast song we didn't use any transitions however when we went from the grafitti park to London we showed Ari-anne hitting the camera, for a change of setting to London.

CRITICAL THEORY

The denotation colours of our music video was the bright colours were green, yellow, blue, orange, pink, red ect, we associate these colours with exciting, summery, lively, and bright. Therefore this showed the bright personalities of the four girls and made our music video lively.

Our music video also agrees with Laura Mulvey's theory of feminism as there are no men in our video and it consists of just girls.

AUDIENCE THEORY

When the audience consume our music video we aimed to have the effect that the song and video make you feel lively and happy. We were influenced by glamour and we thought that our music video would be good for girls to listen to and watch when getting ready to go out.

REPRESENTATION

Our music video stereotypes girls, who want to go out and be like the Pussycat Dolls and lead a Hollywood lifestyle with NO MEN. This is where we use Laura Mulvey's theory of feminism as no men are included and it shows the girls having fun without men.

POST MODERNISM

We were influenced by the Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud, and The Saturdays to show girls looking glamerous and "letting their hair down" having fun. We wanted to show them living a Hollywood lifestyle, and our costumes were influenced by the Saturdays for the use of bright colours. The Pussycat Dolls are glamerous and young and we were influenced by them to make our four girls look glamerous. We achieved this as the four girls in our music video were young, looked glamerous and looked like they were enjoying themselves and having fun.
